The next new

As technology becomes more advance, verbal communicating decrease. Nowadays, people rarely talks over the phone or face to face anymore, everything is done through Facebook or a text message. The next new media will give humans the ability to connect through their minds. Just imagine being able to let someone know exactly what you are thinking or feeling by just looking or touching that person. Somethings can be so hard to explain to someone. Sometimes the only way a person can understand is by showing them or letting them feel what you are feeling. This will put us on an another level of communication.

Contribute to WIKI

So far I have introduced NYCMate, which is a mobile app that gives information and maps of the NYC metro area. It also gives real time data of train’s arrival times. I’ve been using this app for about a year and I have to say that this is one of the best apps that I have ever used.

P2P

What is file sharing?
File sharing, weather it simply distributing file through flash drives, the internet or email, give people the ability to access files for free. File sharing allows a number of people to use the same file or file by some combination of being able to read or view it, write to or modify it, copy it, or print it. Typically, a file sharing system has one or more administrators. Users may all have the same or may have different levels of access privilege. File sharing can also mean having an allocated amount of personal file storage in a common file system like a mainframe.
What is P2P File sharing?
P2p is the next step to file sharing. Its more faster and more reliable, if a mainframe goes out the whole system is down, on the other hand because p2p is made up by multiply users if one user is down the other will keep the system going.
What are some examples of P2P file sharing?
Most files sharing sites are P2P’s like Napster, LimeWire and Kazaa. Skype is also a form of P2P but on a communication level.  Nowadays, film and music industries believe that P2P sharing is unethical because they are losing billions of dollars each year. According to Brian Stelter and Bill Carter New York Times article, “illegal downloads and streams are now responsible for about 40 percent of the revenue the industry loses annually as a result of piracy”. Hollywood needs to adjust they business format by using the P2P and the internet in its favor. Moreover, people like James L. McQuivey, believes that Consumers want be in control of what they watch and wants everything to be easily streamable. Nothing is wrong with that, people have the right to not want to watch a commercial every two minutes, other times we want to cut to a straiten part of a firm. Views should have a choice, and P2P is giving us this ability.

Privacy & Confidentiality

Although new media comes with a lot of benefits it also has it consequences. People have many reasons to fear new media, some because it’s new, others because of the lack of knowledge of the product. But without the innovation nothing new will be introduce, so we have to take a change to get ahead. Moreover, as we learn and experience the technology it will get safer for users.
A good example would be cloud computing. Most business and general users assume that by storing in clouds, their information will be more secured than having it in their present. Nonetheless, their data are being exposed more to the open world than usual.  If employees for the provider are not trustworthy, they might have the opportunity to steal vital information. Secondly, the information lands in the wrong hands, causing both the owner and the users a lot of stress. Situation like this could cause a business to fail, and damaged customer credit records. New Media, like Cloud computing , will brings a new age that will create unimaginable changes/benefits for the whole world.

Advice to Baruch College

How can i bring new media within the college?  The first thing that I would do is turn all text books into e books. This would make life more convenient for all students and books cheaper. No need to carry  heavy text books around all day anymore. In addition, I would create cloud storage for the students and college staff. The storage would allow students to have unlimited access to the work and from anywhere in the world. Not only would these two elevate the college life, these changes will save a lot of tree, making the college greener. As human beings, we must think about the environment, because it affects everyone.
For online classes, I will create a second life Baruch campus. Where professors can have online classes, have meeting with students, and create virtual information. Moreover, students could also meet up with each other to do projects, study,or just connect. With a virtual 3d world the opportunity is endless.

Cloud Computing project

Cloud Computing is the new era, in which the computing world is heading into. According to Michael Armbrust article “A view of cloud computing”, he claims the cold computing is “the long-held dream of computing as a utility, has the potential to transform a large part of the industry, making software even more attractive as a service and shaping the way it hardware is design and purchased”. Basically, cloud computing gives users the ability to receive applications, data, and store information over the internet in providers’ data centers. As long as internet is available, cloud computing enable users to get unlimited access to their information from anyplace or anytime in the world. It also makes our computer more virtual and creates scalability, so that we can track our workmanship, plan and better forecast performance. Although cloud computing comes with a lot of benefits, it also has it consequences. People all over fear cloud computing for many reasons. Some individuals fear the clouds because it’s a new product, while other because of its security threats. Nevertheless, nothing is a hundred percent safe, so we sometimes have to go with it. Besides, as we learn and experience the technology, improvements will be made that will make it safer and safer for users. Think about the uses of this new innovation in the computing world, the possibilities are endless. In additions, clouds will give small business or entrepreneurs the grounds to stand up to multibillion dollar corporation; it will give them the opportunity to start up their businesses with low overhead. As a result, small companies will be able to compete with ideas and not money. Clouds can also charge the way we educate, conduct business, and the way the government communicates internally. Overall the pro-side of cloud computing tends to win over the con-side. Since the beginning of computers, we all have feared information technology and still have concerns about our safety as we progress. Hopefully new invention like Microsoft’s VPSS and HP “cells as a service”, that will create a harmless virtual environment in which user will feel safer. However, on the upside with the advantages that cloud computing brings, companies of all sizes will be able to contribute more time for innovation, leading to greener IT and better products for users. Cloud computing will bring a new age, it will also bring by a lot of problems, but with everything good there will be something bad about it. As long as, we all see the potential that cloud computing has, and realize the good that it can contribute to elevate lives all around the world.

Creativity and New Media

Well, I took this video that I had put up on YouTube last year from the snow blizzard. I was walking to the E train  and it was crazy outside 7 buses was shutdown. I use the editing software that YouTube provide to set up an audio-swap, never did it before hope it turns out good. New media with YouTube : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xijUFO-u4Z0. I really don't know if the audio was updated, it said to give it a few minutes.

Creativity

As the world expands, and the culture change, more and more companies are out seeking new ways to meet the need of their diverse customers.Claire Miller explains in her article that leaders in the past developed new products and release it into to the market to see the feedback it will get. This was a win/lose situation not good for business.  However, recently companies like twitter and flicker have been watching what their customers want and making the changes base on customer demand to better serve them. This is a win\win situation for a company, because they are creating a better environment that customer are looking forward to see.
On the other hand, companies like “Open-source software companies leave innovation up to users, and companies like Bug Labs let people build their own hardware” (Twitter Serves up Ideas from Its Followers, Claire Miller). This equips consumers with the power to get exactly what the want. All these company does is put the tool on the table and the customers put it together, what a easy way to get paid?

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual world are used in many ways from just chilling online to learning. One of the main uses for the virtual world is gaming. In this setting players use their avatars to get through a role playing or story line episode.  On the other hand some people like David Savill, who suffers from autism which is a “brain disorders that can cause difficulties in social interaction, communication and behavior “(Nicole Saidi CNN.com/autism), is able to use his Second Life avatar Dave Sparrow, to socializes and acquire information on autism from all over the world. Additional second life allows and encourages people that are unable to do regular every day activity like dancing, running, swimming, playing and so on, to do in their virtual form. Another way is education, education on the virtual level, consist of 3D recreations of museum and gallery spaces, computer programming tutorials, virtual libraries. Everyday more and more uses are created, so the list is limitless.
If we look at it everything as a good and bad side and this includes virtual worlds. Tells start with the pros people get to interact with each other, people gets to do what they could never do in real life. Furthermore, people are given the ability to be creative and bring new things to the table.  But on the other hand, some people might take it to another level and forget about the real world, they would become addictive to the game or second life and totally forget about their real life. These people could be overweight and glued to the computer. This can become unhealthy and dangerous to their body.
Virtual worlds foster creativity by giving innovators the ability to come up with solutions for our everyday problems.  According to Mark Tutton from CNN article, Companies like IBM are going to the virtual world to save money on travel expense in the recession. Recently, IBM had a conference for 72 hours with about 350 people to come up with new technologies. This is very smart because the cost of a conference of 350 people could cost a fortune. Think about it the flights, rooms, the area for the conference and the food. Hard times are helping companies to see innovative ways to keep them on top.
When it comes to the virtual world the possibilities are endless. Moreover as we progress to the future, and technology become more advance, we will start to unlock the true capability of the virtual world. At this point of time we have to look at the computer and type and move around with the mouse, in the future we would have to ability to feel, smell and taste everything within the virtual world. We will be able to talk, think and move around the second life world with our minds.

Blog about Twitter

A twitter discussion is short statements, nothing too long because you are limited. With twitter a person can hide their identity. So people can’t know who they are, they can be unprofessional.  With blackboard you can say everything you would like to say because you have the space. Unlike twitter students has to be professional at all times because it’s a class. In a class discussion it’s more face to face, so it’s a different connection.  The atmosphere is more formal, everyone has to take turns because only one person can say something at a time. On the other hand on the computer everyone can input at the sometime. At the end of the day it’s the results, everyone say what they think about a topic, but its different ways of rules that guides us.

Social Networking Sites

Facebook was social networking site that was built for an older crowd, college students and older. Over the years Facebook has acquire younger users.  Facebook has a polite tone, people put up status that’s about life and motivation. It is also a place where people share items that others might find interesting to keep the conversation going. But it’s mainly used to keep in connection with friends and family. Now, when you look at the profiles they all look the same, no way to personalized it.
MySpace is a more relax website, where people can be themselves.  No need to worry about your boss looking at your profile, it okay. When you look at MySpace, you can see how easy it is to use. MySpace is very colorful. It also gives you the ability to customize your profile unlike Facebook.  Users try to stay relevant and up to date with the times. It seems like the main thing is to network with other users and trying to become popular. Who have the most friends’ wins. In addition, its feels like it all about music, a lot of promotion about artist.
Twitter is a very simple site but complex. They give you the ability to customized your profile and twitter page with different colors and pictures. They limit the amount that you can say to a 140 characters, so you say less but everything you need to say and if people want to know more they reply, this start a conversation flow. You are also able to see what people are thinking, doing, are saying about you. It’s like a smaller version of a blog.
Plenty of fish is also a social network but with a dating spin. The layout of both the home page and profile is very simplistic. The site has an option of looking at different faces of males or females to find users that are attractive to you. And then you send a message to them. Plenty of fishes don’t looks like it’s has any rules or tones to follow.  It really seems like something anyone can put together.
